Scented Letters

Scented Letters News

Discover the Scented Letter project, brought to life by artist Emma Aars.

This project explores the connection between perfume and letters. How a scent can evoke a moment, capture an emotion, or bring back a memory, whether it's a summer romance or a quiet afternoon. Like a fragrance that takes us back to something we thought we'd forgotten, a letter, with its texture, rhythm, and physical presence, can capture silent gestures, thoughts we don't always say out loud. Perfume and love letters have this in common: they express the intimate, where words fail. And that's where they become poetry.

BIOGRAPHY

EMMA AARS

“My name is Emma Aars, a Norwegian writer and art director based in London. I’ve always been drawn to the visual and material side of writing, and creating letters (rather than simply writing them) is something I’ve been doing for years. I collect papers, fragments, bits of text that will one day end up forming a letter, just before being sent. Unlike a perfume, sending a letter involves this generous act of letting go. Yet, letters and perfumes both remain intimate exchanges between two people, near or far.”
